CO Code definition

CO Code is defined by the "D," "E," and "F" digits of a 10-digit telephone number within the North American Numbering Plan. Each NXX Code contains 10,000 station numbers. Historically, entire NXX code blocks have been assigned to specific individual local exchange end office switches, because, in general, this approach did not conflict with geographic numbering except as the CO approached number exhaustion. Where there are multiple COs in the same geographic area, this assignment method must change. With the advent of end-user telephone number portability, the usual one-on-one association on an NXX with an end office switching entity will be severed.
CO Code is the three digit switch entity indicator which is defined by the "D", "E", and "F" digits of a 10-digit telephone number within the NANP. Each NXX Code contains 10,000 station numbers.
